Additional Ways to Give

In addition to traditional methods of financial support, members who wish to donate to Now is the Time to Move Forward may also consider providing a non-cash gift.

WHAT IS A NON-CASH GIFT?

Transferring ownership of an asset, rather than selling the asset and donating the proceeds, is one kind of non-cash gift.

WHAT KIND OF ASSET MIGHT I DONATE?

Appreciated investment property held more than one year, such as publicly traded stocks, mutual fund shares, bonds, real estate, collectibles and other such readily marketable property may receive favorable tax treatment. Personal property such as automobiles, jewelry and other items may also be donated.

WHY GIVE A NON-CASH GIFT?

The tax code favorably treats non-cash gifts. Giving a non-cash asset to FUMC may eliminate capital gains tax liability and may increase after-tax proceeds.

HOW DOES THIS TAX BENEFIT WORK?

Itemized Deductions: An individual or business may include 100% of the market value of many non-cash assets as a charitable contribution if the asset is held for more than one year.

Capital Gains: The gift of a non-cash asset does not generate capital gains tax liability for the donor. As the gift beneficiary, FUMC will realize the full market value of the non-cash asset at the time of transfer and will not incur a capital gains tax liability.

WHAT IF I SELL A NON-CASH ASSET AND GIFT THE PROCEEDS?

You may be subject to capital gains tax liability and the amount of your gift to FUMC may be reduced.

HOW DO I MAKE A NON-CASH GIFT?

1) Contact the Church Office for a copy of the "Gift of Stock - Transfer Instructions."
2) Contact your broker and request transfer.
3) When you have completed the transfer, please notify FUMC.

CAN I MAKE A NON-CASH GIFT FROM AN IRA?

Traditional IRA: If you are 72 years old or older, you can donate up to $100,000 per year to FUMC without incurring penalty or tax liability. A gift from a traditional IRA can assist in satisfying a minimum distribution requirement and may lower your over-all tax liability. Remember that for preferable tax treatment, a gift from a traditional IRA should pass directly to a beneficiary and should not pass through an intermediate account.

Roth IRA: If you are 59.5 years or older, you can make a tax-free withdrawal in any amount from your Roth IRA and donate to FUMC. Regardless of your age, you can withdraw your annual IRA contribution amount and donate to FUMC without incurring a penalty or tax liability.
Note: Any discussion of tax treatment is not intended as, and should not be considered tax advice. For personal tax advice, consider consulting a professional tax advisor.
